An ants’ nest can contain hundreds of thousands of ants, scattered along a
series of intricate galleries. They need large quantities of food to feed so
many insects, so the adults spend a great deal of time carrying seeds and
other food to the nest to feed the developing larvae and younger insects, and
to store food for the winter.
Ants’ nests are usually underground, and sometimes have
chambers between the galleries. Food is stored in them, and certain ants are
responsible for looking after the stores so that they don’t go bad.
