The vicuna is a member
of camel family, found in the Andes Mountains of South America, usually above
the snow line at heights of above 15.000 feet. Unlike the camel it has no hump,
and grows to about three feet at the shoulder. It lives in small herds, eats
grass and, thanks to its remarkable speed, endurance and keen eyesight is rarely
seen at close quarters. The Vicuna has very fine fleece, which is made into top
quality (and very expensive) cloth.
