These small birds are very beautiful and can be found in dense jungles or by the
sides of tropical mountains, mostly in Colombia and Ecuador. The humming noise
they make is caused by the beating of their wings as they hover over the flowers
where they gather nectar with long bills. The hummingbird’s wings can beat up to
seventy-five times in a single second, enabling the bird to reach speeds of
fifty miles an hour! During the courtship flights of the hummingbird, its wings
can beat as fast as tow hundred times a second.
