In general, the life span of animals in the wild is decided
more by their ability to defend themselves against attack than by their
physical make-up. This is why tortoises are particularly well adapted for
survival, despite their slow movements. Their strong shells, into which they
retreat when threatened with danger, make them able to withstand almost any
attacker except man. So they are able to survive for a long time, and some
species can even live to be 150 years old. Giant tortoises that weigh over 230
Kilos (about 500Pounds ) live in the remote Galapagos Islands.
