Planting the aquarium
The aquarium may be planted dry or wet the latter being the best and ideal
method.
For planting wet follow the steps given below.
1.
Fill three quarters of the height of the tank with water. To avoid
disturbing the carefully contoured gravel and terracing direct the hose pipe
running into a saucer or a thin sheet of plastic placed on the aquarium
floor. The overflow from this container will then gently fill the aquarium
without any undue disturbance. The water to be used should be free of
chlorine, toxic metallic residues and hardness. Water conditioners that
remove chlorine and precipitate metals can be used to pre-treat the
water.
2.
Allow the water temperature to equilibrate for some time before introducing
the plants.
3.
Planting is done working from the edges of the tank towards the center. The
tall plants go around the sides and back, with the bushy plants behind and
between the rocks. Shorter plants look effective immediately, in front
of rocks.
4.
Cuttings can be bunched together and a length of about 2.5 cm pushed into
the gravel to root.
5.
The crown (base) of a plant should be at level with, or just above, the
surface of the gravel.
6.
In cold-water aquariums, place a few small pebbles to prevent uprooting and
foraging by fishes (particularly goldfish) and to protect plant crowns.
7.
When planting is over fill the tank to the desired level leaving some head
space at the top.
