William Ramsay was born in Glasgow in 1852, he studied in his native
town, followed by two years in Fitig's lab at Jubingen. While he was there
his thesis on orthotoulic acid and its derivatives earned him degree of
doctor of philosophy. After many professorships he moved in 1887 to the
chair of inorganic Chemistry at University college, London. He discovered
the elements known as noble gases and also determined their place in the
periodic table. He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1904. Yet another
important discovery was the detection of helium in the emanations of radium,
the importance of which was unknown then.
