A pioneering nuclear physicist who first described the fission of the
Uranium nucleus. She was a Viennese Jew. Since there were no schools for
girls, Its only at the age of 21 that she was tutored. In two years she
amasses a wealth of information and in 1901 was ready toi join the
university that just had been started for girls. Later she went to Germany
and in collaboration with Otto Hahn, did her research on radioactivity.
During Hitler's reign she fled to Sweden where she was on exile. This was
the reason for her for not being awarded Nobel prize. It was instead awarded
to Otto Hahn, though the research had been done by Meitner. In 1992,
retrospectively, the 109th element has been named as 'Meitnarium' in her
honor
