Lise Meitnere(1878-1968)

 

                A pioneering nuclear physicist who first described the fission of the Uranium nucleus. She was a Viennese Jew. Since there were no schools for girls, Its only at the age of 21 that she was tutored. In two years she amasses a wealth of information and in 1901 was ready toi join the university that just had been started for girls. Later she went to Germany and in collaboration with Otto Hahn, did her research on radioactivity. During Hitler's reign she fled to Sweden where she was on exile. This was the reason for her for not being awarded Nobel prize. It was instead awarded to Otto Hahn, though the research had been done by Meitner. In 1992, retrospectively, the 109th element has been named as 'Meitnarium' in her honor
