British surgeon. He conceived the idea of making wounds antiseptic. The
process of making the operating area, instruments etc. sterile before
operation was also introduced by him. He is regarded as the founder of
antiseptic surgery. As profe3ssor of surgery at Glasgow university, he was
aware that many people survived the trauma of operations but died afterwards
of 'ward fever'. Lister believed that it was microbes carried in the air
that caused diseases to be spread inwards. People who had been operated on
were specially vulnerable as their skin was open and germs could easily
enter. The wound itself had to be cleaned. His methods increased survival
rates of operated patients.
