Jonas Edward Salk(1914-1995)

The US physician and microbiologist who did research on influenza virus
at University of Michigan. The scientist who developed the first successful
vaccine against poliomyelitis. It proved effective in tests on school
children in 1954. The Salk vaccine is made by cultivating three strains of
virus separately in monkey tissue. A series of three or four injections with
the killed virus vaccine is required to confer immunity.
