Henry
Cavendish(1731-1810)

The British chemist and physicist who worked extensively on gases. He
discovered hydrogen and the composition of water and nitric acid. He showed
that the water is produced by burning hydrogen in air and thus proved that
the water is a compound, not an element as believed until then. He
discovered the freezing points of mercury and many other matters. He also
determined the gravitational constant in Newton's law of Gravitation. In
recognition of his achievements the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge
University was founded.
