Fredrick
Banting(1891-1941)

A Canadian Physician born on November 16, 1891. He studied medicine at
the University of Toronto where he carried out extensive research in
diabetes. He discovered the technique for isolating the hormone insulin
which is produced in the pancreas. Insulin when injected, reduces the level
of blood sugar and thus relieves the symptoms of diabetes mellitus. This
discovery made the treatment of diabetes possible. In 1923 he was awarded
the Nobel prize for physiology/medicine. He died in an aero plane crash on
February 21,1941.
