Indian Physicist who was born in tiruchirapilly (Tamil Nadu) on
November 7, 1888. His academic brilliance was established at a very young
age. At fifteen he finished at the head of the class to receive B.A with
honors in Physics and English. in 1917, he was offered professorship in
Calcutta University, where he stayed for next fifteen years. His work is
Optics and scattering of light received world wide recognition and he was
elected to the Royal society of London in 1924 and British made him a knight
of the empire in 1929. The following year he was awarded Nobel prize for his
work popularly known as the 'Raman effect'. In 1970, at the age of 82, he
was honored with the Bharat Ratna
