The Scottish doctor and bacteriologist who worked in St. Mary's Hospital,
Praed Street. On 3rd September 1928, Fleming, Prof. of bacteriology returned
from a holiday and while clearing away his Petri dishes of bacteria, noticed
that one of them had been contaminated by mould. He had discovered
penicillin, the first antibiotic used to treat diseases. In 1944 Fleming was
honored with knighthood and in 1945 shared a Nobel prize with Chain and
Florey.
